Cllr. John Sheahan of Limerick City & County Council was elected Cathaoirleach of the Southern Regional Assembly for 2020-21 at a socially distant annual meeting on Friday 17th July. Cllr. Deirdre O’Brien of Cork County Council was elected as Leas-Cathaoirleach.

FIRESPOL Interregional Study Visit to Latvia, February 2020

The sixth Interregional Interregional Study Visit of the FIRESPOL project took place in Riga, Lativa in February 2020. Enda Hogan and Derville Brennan, Southern Regional Assembly were joined at the event by Thomas Butler, Waterford City and County Council. The second study visit was to Getliņi EKO, Ltd. - a company jointly established by the Riga and Stopiņi Municipalities, which manages Getliņi, the largest municipal solid waste landfill in the Baltic States. Getliņi is one of the most modern landfills in Europe. It is created and developed as a modern and safe waste recycling centre. Since the opening of the sorting plant in the territory on 26 October 2015, biodegradable waste has been used for production of biogas, meanwhile materials and metal products useful for processing have been delivered to companies engaged in the recovery and recycling of these materials.

Kilkenny Abbey Quarter Launch 2, July 2019

Leas-Cathaoirleach, Cllr. John Brennan represented the Southern Regional Assembly at the launch of the Abbey Quarter regeneration project in Kilkenny. The initiative is a part of the sustainable urban development scheme, co-financed by the ERDF through the S&E Regional Programme 2014-20.

S&E ROP Social Housing Retrofit Scheme Training

Staff from Local Authorities and the Dept of Housing, Planning and Local Government attended a training day at WIT Arena. Training for this ERDF co-funded scheme was delivered by Southern Regional Assembly staff with assistance from Paul Herron, Audit Manager - ERDF Audit Authority.
