Southern Regional Assembly at the International Transport Virtual Summit 2021

From the 17-28 May 2021, following a successful expression of interest, the Southern Regional Assembly was invited by the Department of Transport to host a virtual exhibition stand at the 2021 International Transport Forum (ITF) Summit.
The ITF is part of the OECD Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, an intergovernmental organisation of 62 member countries to share knowledge and promote exchange among policy makers for better transport. ITF’s Annual Summit is the world’s largest gathering of transport ministers and the leading global platform for dialogue on transport policy.
Being an exhibitor at the ITF virtual summit presented a unique and positive opportunity to communicate on a world stage the work of the SRA and showcase our remarkable Region.
Under Ireland’s presidency, the theme for ITF 2021 Summit was– Transport Innovation for Sustainable Development (ITF Summit).
This theme is a key enabler for our region to achieve our vision through the National Planning Framework, National Development Plan, and implementation of our Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy to create a Creative and Innovative, Green and Liveable Region.
The Assembly, in coordination with stakeholders, supports innovative actions for transport in our Region for:
- Delivering Compact, Planned,Infrastructure-led Growth, Sustainable Mobility and Low Carbon Transport;
- Enhanced Regional Accessibility;
- High Quality International Connectivity.
You can access videos and presentations from the ITF Summit that convey our diverse Region and the important work the Assembly is doing for the sustainable development of the Region, including insights from our partner stakeholders on their impressive work in transport network planning, urban transformation projects, innovation in smart mobility and active travel initiatives.
We forge strong links between the implementation of national and regional planning policy and EU funded projects. For example, information on the positive impact of the Interreg Europe MATCH- UP project (modal interchange for lower carbon transport in urban areas) and the implementation of our 10 Minute City and Town Framework.
We will show you other examples of collaborations through the Interreg Europe Blue Green Cities project and Interreg Europe Cohes3ion project (themes of nature-based design solutions, blue and green networks, Smart Region and Smart Specialisation frameworks respectively) which also support actions for greener, smarter and sustainable mobility across our Region.
The ITF Summit 2021 was a huge success and the Assembly’s exhibit content was shared in a forum connecting more than 1,700 participants from 85 countries, including 43 Ministers and Vice Ministers responsible for transport.
